The exhibition " The church of Agia Zoni in the city of Varosha: 50 years later" takes place on the occasion of the arrival of the Holy Girdle of the Virgin Mary from the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos to the partially occupied Metropolis of Constantia and Ammochostos (5-11 February 2024).

The exhibition is part of the activities organized this year by the Metropolis of Constantia and Ammochostos, in collaboration with the "Agios Epiphanios" Cultural Academy, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Turkish invasion of 1974.

The material for the exhibition " The church of Agia Zoni in the city of Varosha: 50 years later" is mainly sourced from the forthcoming book by Dr. Andreas Foulias and Dr. Christodoulos Hatzichristodoulou titled "The Religious Monuments of the New City of Ammochostos" (i.e. Varosha), published by the Metropolis of Constantia and Ammochostos and the "Agios Epifanios" Cultural Academy.

This volume records the history and treasures of all the religious monuments of the new city of Ammochostos, which emerged from extensive scientific research. The recordings and descriptions are supplemented by rich photographic material, including archival evidence (old photographs, reproductions of maps, codes, and records, architectural drawings), as well as recent photographs depicting the exterior and interior of all the religious monuments of the enclosed city.

The publication and exhibition are addressed to all those who wish to explore the heritage and tradition of a historic city, which, over the past 50 years, has been occupied, enclosed, inaccessible, and whose religious monuments have been stripped, altered, and destroyed. We nostalgically turn our gaze towards the occupied Ammochostos/Famagusta and spiritually pay homage to the churches of our city and the desecrated cemeteries of our ancestors. We stand reverently before the sealed doors of the medieval church of Agia Zoni within the walls of Ammochostos and the magnificent church of the new city of Varosha, and we pray for the liberation of our occupied country to come soon.
